Missouri- final stop
Tuesday, September 03, 2013
Our final destination was Missouri. There aren't any homes where the saints lived but the Liberty jail replica is out there. We got to hear about Joseph's time imprisoned there which was a very difficult time for him and the saints.
I always imagined more of a log cabin, but it really was a pretty inescapable jail with the thick walls, barred windows, and even rocks in the rafters so prisoners couldn't escape that way.
Joseph received a lot of revelation during this time.
Looking at this scene, all of the inconveniences and atrocities hit me at once. Rocky floor, freezing weather, cramped quarters, sanitary accommodations, the lack of light- all of it made me wonder how they did it and came out stronger for it.
We went into that interesting building, which is owned by the church of Christ. It looked like a pretty museum. They have some pretty cool heirlooms inside from Joseph and Emma that they received from their children.
We also went into the visitor's center across from the church of Christ building and listened to some youth sing. We were tired at this point as you can tell. Well David was tired and I wasn't feeling great. Then we headed over to the Kansas City temple for our final visit of the trip.
David took his final chance to get dressed in a parking lot.
The Kansas City Temple is pretty large and has a house for the temple president right near it.
As you can see comparing Colleen to the temple, it is massive.
It was pretty windy outside. We took this picture before we went inside to do sealings. Incidentally I fainted while we were there which led to all the temple workers speculating if I was pregnant. Luckily I felt good enough that night to enjoy some amazing BBQ recommended to us by some locals.
The next morning we flew back to Salt Lake but not before going out in the morning to a disc golf course in the heat and humidity. The course was interesting but my enthusiasm dampened (ha pun intended) from the stickiness and heat after about 9 baskets. Luckily Nathan and David finished the course while we tagged along watching. The whole trip was a wonderful- an adventure, but a meaningful adventure that we were glad to share with Colleen and Nathan.
